Superwoman Doesn’t Exist: The Myth of the Strong Black Woman

Please join us for a virtual book discussion and conversation with author Marita Golden, as she presents The Strong Black Woman How a Myth Endangers the Physical and Mental Health of Black Women. his presentation will focus on The Strong Black Woman syndrome which is a deeply embedded cultural belief in the African American community, and many communities of color, that dictates a definition of strength for women that relies on self-sacrifice, the censorship of expressions of physical and emotional pain, perpetual resilience and placing the needs of others before individual needs and desires. The high cost of this toxic belief is discussed in the book.  The author will read from the book and discus the process of creating it as well as the mental health practices described in the book. The discussion will be followed by a question and answer session.

This event is sponsored by the collaboration of the African, Black, American, Caribbean (ABAC) Employee Resource Group, the Institute Community & Equity Office , My Sister’s Keeper, the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Sloan School of Management, and the Women’s & Gender Studies Program.
